about us

walk to art was conceived in 2006, in New York, as Bernadette Alibrando pounded the pavements from Brooklyn to Chelsea, while working in the city's fine art photographic gallery Silverstein Photography.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts (majoring in Photography) from the Victorian College of the Arts (part of University of Melbourne), she has a keen eye for design, line and colour.

For 3 years Alibrando held one of only 6 positions on the Advisory Committee of Art Beat – the young members' program at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne. Before leaving for New York, Alibrando was an art consultant with a large, Melbourne-based commercial gallery group.

walk to art encompasses all her great loves: art, walking, food and wine!

Meet the Makers – In 2006, while visiting New York City with walk to art, Alibrando discovered TOAST in NYC. TOAST is a non-profit, artist-run corporation whose purpose is to support and promote the working artist of TriBeCa with innovative events designed to engage the public in an ongoing dialogue about the production, promotion and preservation of the arts.

In 2012 she decided to bring a small version of TOAST to Fitzroy and Collingwood, and Meet the Makers was born, with the first edition running in 2013. The event was:

  • an oportunity to spread the word about unique individuals who make the City of Yarra cultural and diverse
  • a carefully curated weekend of 8 events in studios, independent spaces and businesses in Fitzroy and Collingwood
  • to provide people with knowledge of art practices and processes through activities in which the participant can meet the maker and gain a greater understanding of artists, art spaces and creative businesses
  • supported by the City of Yarra and Liquorice Studios (with an extensive media coverage).
